Our bikes are tested to the internationally recognised standard of BS EN ISO 4210. This involves 5 separate tests - 2 impact and 3 fatigue tests. It is an acceptable practice to supply 5 frames for this procedure, but we put one frame through all 5 tests. It successfully passed. However, we wanted to how strong the bike really was, so we asked for the frame to be put back onto the test which most frames fail on..  this being the Fatigue with pedalling forces. The pass rate it 100,00 cycles.  Bureau Veritas (the testing company) stated that most bikes fail between 120-150,000 cycles, whereas the Celero frame lasted 220,000 cycles before the metal dropout failed. That's well over twice as strong as the international safety test requires... So yes, there are strong.. 💪

We are constantly experimenting with different products including varnishes, enamels, polyurethane and epoxy resins to find a perfect blend of weatherproof(ness..?) and finish. But we always use a marine grade product as this ensures the highest degree of protection. These products are used to protect wooden boats, both above and below the water line in salt water. 

Our frames receive up to 6 coats before we are satisfied with the finish. 

Additionally, we are currently experimenting with Coach Kote - this is a locally produced product that has received the Royal Seal of Approval and is used on His Majesty King Charles III ceremonial coaches.

If you treat our frames with the same care and respect as any other premium bike frames, then you will be riding a Silva frame long into the future.

The frames are hollow to reduce the weight, and the thickness of the walls varies depending on the stress placed on that particular area. Although we have demonstrated the strength of our frames, we have still over-engineered them to take account of any variables in this natural material. In terms of weight, they are broadly comparable to an alloy or aluminium frame, however we prioritise building beautiful strong frames over saving a few grams here or there.
